NV-201

In June 2007, Novalar licensed the patent rights for NV-201 from the Boston-based Forsyth Institute. NV-201 utilizes a polymer fiber to locally deliver an antibiotic directly into the root canal for the purpose of reducing the bacteria most often associated with inter-appointment pain. The antibiotic used in NV-201 is clindamycin, an antibiotic commonly used systemically in endodontics.

Published literature has cited a high incidence of root canal failure in necrotic teeth treated in a single visit, attributed to the presence of residual bacteria. It is estimated that the overall success rate of endodontic treatment could be as much as 10-26% (Nagaoka et al.) higher if the root canal is successfully disinfected prior to final restoration.

Novalar believes that there is a significant market opportunity for a novel therapy in treating root canals - with approximately 17 million root canal procedures performed annually in the United States alone. In fact, preliminary market research conducted by Forsyth indicates a demand from endodontists and general dentists for this novel product concept. And as the vast majority of endodontic procedures are conducted by general dentists, NV-201 provides a unique strategic fit with OraVerse™.

Like each inventive Novalar solution, NV-201 and its path through development is guided by a talented team in action with industry expertise in successful clinical development, sales and marketing, and new product launches. By expanding our pipeline with product candidates such as NV-201, Novalar is on its way to becoming a premier oral specialty pharmaceutical company.
